Hungry for power, Liberal leader Michael Ignatieff is helping the Harper Tories to pass Bill C-15, under which people convicted of “serious” drug crimes will automatically face prison terms of six months or longer. But as the expert witnesses called to speak to this legislation pointed out, the law will simply jam more people into over-crowded prisons, while doing nothing to address the health crisis related to drug abuse.

In an illegal incursion into Ecuador on 1 March, Colombian troops murdered 17 combatants of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia-People’s Army (FARC-EP), including Comandante Raúl Reyes, a long-time military commander and member of the FARC-EP’s Secretariat. Among the other victims was the well-known revolutionary song-writer Julian Conrado.

Secretary General of the Communist Party of Venezuela (PCV) Oscar Figuera, paraphrasing Che Guevara, said that “from a defeat more can be learned than from victories.” During his weekly press conference on Dec. 3, Figuera gave a preliminary analysis of the results of the Dec. 2 referendum on Constitutional reform proposed by the President of the Republic, Hugo Chavez Frias.

Thousands of Afghans, and dozens of Canadians and other NATO troops, are dying in this vicious cycle of killing. The aid projects which are supposed to justify the occupation are a total fiasco. All that has been accomplished in six years is to replace one group of reactionary warlords with a different group of “pro-Western” warlords.

George W. Bush, Stephen Harper, and Felipe Calderon meet Aug. 20-21 for the third annual summit of North American leaders. But their real business has been taking place behind closed doors, away from the eyes of the 450 million inhabitants of Canada, the U.S. and Mexico.

We urge the labour and democratic movements to give all-out support for June 29 actions being organized by Aboriginal groups across the country, from rallies and marches to direct actions.

The minority Harper government is clinging to power with the goal of driving through the SPP (”Security and Prosperity Partnership” with the U.S.) and other sellout policies, despite the opposition of most Canadians. It’s time to drive the Tories out of office, before their damage becomes too deep to reverse!
